Hey guys — this is for Kolby more than for RFM, regarding the reference to the Roman governors’ behaviors in Roman Britain. Kolby made the point, from the Fall of Civilizations Podcast (shout out to Paul Cooper) that the Roman governors of Britain with their huge armies tried to make new Roman Empires. This isn’t QUITE what Cooper’s point was.
The British were a thorn in the side of the Romans, but Rome felt is had to hang onto Britain for the economic benefits. But the fact Britain is an island and the Scots were SO feared with their blue-painted naked berserker warriors that Hadrian finally gave up and built the wall. Maintaining Roman governance of Britain required such a massive occupational force that any governor installed into Britain immediately found himself at the head of the largest unified fighting force in the Roman Empire.
This realization gave these governors an injection of stupid, and invariably they would get it into their heads that they could march on Rome, that they could become the new Roman Emperor..they weren’t generally trying to break away, but to take over.
A relatively small correction, I suppose, but I think it’s a salient point.
