RFM,
You are in a position to do two very powerful things here.
1. Make this into a smoking gun by showing after 1978 the church tended to continue giving predominantly white languages/countries the full edition, while tending to give predominantly non-white languages/countries the abridgment.
2. Prophesy the future! The church’s way out of the current, very problematic full edition will likely be by releasing an abridgment in ENGLISH! Then all languages. The abridgment will become the only authorized version for all official talks and lessons. The full edition will likely be relegated to scholarly endeavors only. We can expect some Hinkley-esque laughter about who can object to having a church mandated, funner, shorter version of the BOM to be used in all lessons and meetings of the Church? All the boring and troublesome bits will disappear. BOM reading will enjoy a surge. It will be exciting to rank and file members how the ongoing restoration is bringing them closer to our sacred book of scripture. No one will miss the missing passages. Keep in mind this will not be the first time the church has taken something from the mission field countries/languages, and standardized it for the whole church. Remember the Ensign/Liahona? Eventually we may even see similar cautions about the excised BOM passages to the cautions we receive regarding apocrypha: Warning! This is only for scholars and the most spiritually advanced readers.
