The idea that prophets sometimes get things wrong is one apologetic that will never be openly approved by the leaders of the church because it provides a warrant for cafeteria Mormonism. If the prophets get things wrong and provide no prospective criteria for distinguishing the right teachings from the wrong ones, it’s up to me as an individual to make that judgment. However, I don’t think the apologists can agree with that approach. It could lead to an avalanche of heterodoxy. So the idea that prophets get things wrong will probably have to be married to the idea that members of the church are required to obey them even when they’re wrong.
